"Remember that your worth is not defined by external validation, it's defined by your unique qualities and gifts, and the impact you have on the people and world around you."

AGE: 65

PROFESSION: Registered Nurse

What is the best thing about being your age?

Not caring what other people think of me, and being comfortable with who I am as a woman. Also, feeling grounded in the belief that people are inherently good, and always living in the space.

What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?

My sister died from pancreatic cancer in April 2007. My family had moved from CA to WA to take care of her in her final months, which was a blessing in many ways. It allowed me to spend precious time with her and to be with her when she passed. In May of that same year, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. I was still grieving for my sister, but had to quickly learn to navigate the world of being someone with cancer - doctors, surgery, chemo, all the things. My children were only 3 and 9 at the time, so I had the added terrible worry of leaving them motherless. My husband was a tremendous support, but was dealing with his own loss - there was a mass shooting at his previous place of employment, and he lost 2 friends. We made the decision to move back to CA because we'd have better support, but I had to leave my parents and brother. So much sadness. But I beat it, and here I am, standing, stronger, more compassionate, knowing nothing can keep me down.

What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?

Spending 2 weeks solo in Belize last year. What an amazing experience to be completely independent and not have to consider anyone else's desires and needs. It was spectacular.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Oh man, not to care what people think, not to judge myself by society standards, that putting myself first does not make me selfish, to always speak my truth even it may piss people off. Stand my ground if I know what's right for ME. Appreciate my body because it is flawless as is. I'd also tell myself to start putting money in an IRA!!.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Raising strong, kind, independent and responsible men despite the odds. Raising two sons as a single parent was an incredible journey filled with challenges, sacrifices and profound results. The true reward comes when you see them make good choices, treat others with kindness and empathy, succeed, not only in their careers, but also as good men, partners and possibly fathers themselves.

What is a trait you are most proud of?

I'm kind to everyone and can see beyond people's exteriors and walls.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Buying produce at the farmers market every Sunday.

What is your motto or favorite quote?

What goes around comes around.

Words of wisdom to younger women

Protect your peace and set boundaries. Say no when needed and surround yourself with positive people. Don't rush to the next milestone, happiness is in the present. Love yourself first, and never settle out of fear of being alone. You are enough, never let the world make you feel otherwise!

Additional thoughts...

Enjoy this time in your life - revel in your youth and marvel at your gorgeous body. Don't put things off until later - do the things NOW! Be true to yourself. Always be kind. Don't settle for good enough - it's ok to want more. Travel as much as you can. Remember that your worth is not defined by external validation, it's defined by your unique qualities and gifts, and the impact you have on the people and world around you.
