50 Over 50 Project for 2020
"Ultimately, you are the one you have to live with, you should go after your own dreams, even if they don’t work out, at least you tried."
Profession: Attorney, and sometimes performer.
What is the best thing about being your age?
I have enough experience now to know that I can make it through almost anything, so I have less fear about taking chances.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I had the opportunity to stay with my dad for the last few years of his life so that he didn’t have to leave his home. I didn’t handle it perfectly, but I am so grateful I was able to do that.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Wrestling with a puppy.
What is your most treasured possession?
A box of Japanese puppet heads I got at a temple sale in Kyoto with one of my best friends. It was a great day, and they are beautiful and handmade and one of a kind.
What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
Free diving in Belize.
What is your greatest extravagance?
It used to be travel. Now, it’s probably organic produce.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Right now, I’d like to be more fit. The lockdown has really messed with my schedule and mobility.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
What do you most value in your friends?
Humor and honesty. A sense of play.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Just try. I talked myself out of a lot of jobs and experiences when I was younger out of fear, or because I thought I wasn’t qualified, or my parents wanted me to do something else. Ultimately, you are the one you have to live with, you should go after your own dreams, even if they don’t work out, at least you tried.
Additional thoughts about aging...
My grandmother, Minnie Myrl Lee, used to say "you just be you, don’t try to please anyone else." Very good advice.
