"Eventually you become the person you were always meant to be."
What is the best thing about being your age?
I no longer have to apologize for how I see things and for expressing my opinion. It has taken many years to become me. I guess it is just about not worrying about what others think. Confidence comes with age.
What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?
Coming from a divorced family, my mother raised four of us by herself. She only had an 8th grade education (although comparable to today’s HS education, maybe better), but she was able to buy a home and go on to raise all of us to be very successful adults. We had very little, but she demonstrated determination and strength, which was more valuable than anything. She provided me a role model of how to get through the tough times that come to all of us. She was truly a “feminist” before there was a term for a strong, determined woman.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Raised (as a mostly single parent) two wonderful sons. I am so proud of the men/fathers they have become. Not only are they good men/fathers, successful professionally, but they have good hearts and are very kind and respectful of others.
What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
Traveled to all continents of the world, except one: Antarctic (still on the list). Skydiving.
What is your most treasured possession?
My family. Travel memories and meeting wonderful people from all over the world.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Spending time with my family; children and grandchildren. Traveling to different places. Working in my garden.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
Very organized and the ability to multitask. This trait was very helpful while raising my sons and during my working career.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would be taller.
what is your greatest extravagance?
Flying first class drinking good champagne.
What do you most value in your friends?
Their ability to let me be me, their loyalty, and their sense of humor. I have a group of special friends whom I met during my work career. We have gotten together every year, for an adventure (girl’s weekend) consecutively for the last 25 years. It is the best times.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Have more confidence in yourself. You are smarter and tougher than you realize, so go for it. It is ok to fail.
What is your motto or favorite quote?
“It is not the situation it is your attitude/perception of the situation that matters.” You can decide/control how you react to a situation by adjusting your view of the situation.”
Words of wisdom for younger women
Things will work out, just have patience and believe in yourself. Life is very short so do not wait to enjoy it. Stay out of the sun and take care of your skin.
