50 OVER 50 PROJECT FOR 2021
"Eventually you become the person you were always meant to be,
and I like myself."
age: 70 profession: Retired – Marketing/Management,
What is the best thing about being your age?
I no longer have to apologize for how I see things and for expressing my opinion. It has taken many years to become me. I guess it is just about not worrying about what others think. That is very freeing to really be yourself, which comes with age. I am very comfortable with myself.
What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?
Coming from a divorced family, my mother raised four of us by herself. She only had an 8th grade education (although comparable to today’s HS education, maybe better), but she was able to buy a home and go on to raise all of us to be very successful adults. We had very little, but she demonstrated determination and strength, which was more valuable than anything. This provided me a model of how to get through the tough times that come to all of us. She was truly a “feminist” before there was a term for a strong, determined woman who did not need a man.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Raised (as a mostly single parent) two wonderful sons. I am so proud of the men/fathers they have become. Not only are they good fathers, successful professionally, but they have good hearts and are very kind and respectful of others.
What's your favorite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
Skydiving. Traveled to all continents of the world, except one: Antarctica.
What is your most treasured possession?
My family. Travel memories and meeting wonderful people from all over the world.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Spending time with my family; children and grandchildren. Traveling to different places. Working in my garden.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
Very organized and the ability to multitask. This trait was very helpful during my working career.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
what is your greatest extravagance?
Flying first class drinking champagne.
What do you most value in your friends?
Their ability to let me be me and their loyalty. Humor of course. I have a group of friends from work that we get together every year for an adventure (girl’s weekend). This will be out 25th year. It is the best times.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Have more confidence in yourself. You are smarter and tougher than you realize, so go for it. I usually did, but it was not always easy.
What is your motto or favorite quote?
“Put on your big girl underwear and get on with it."
“It is not the situation, it is your attitude/perception of the situation that matters.”
Words of wisdom for younger women
Things will work out, just have patience and believe in yourself no matter what. Life is very short so do not wait to enjoy it. Stay out of the sun and take care of your skin.
