40 Over 40 for 2023
You've got this...and don't let anyone or anything tell you otherwise. It's all there for the taking. But, be kind along the way, and take the time to listen and hear the good stuff that's all around you.
PROFESSION: Author, writer, retired computer geek
What is the best thing about being your age?
Having so many stories to tell, experiences to share. Being able to be generous with my time.
Favorite thing you've checked off your bucket list?
Having a great kid whose company I really enjoy! (and finishing those three triathlons!) And living/working abroad in a country where I didn't speak the language and making it work.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Sharing my life with a great partner, especially when I summit that hill he made me climb (physically and metaphorically!).
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I'm Jewish, from an orthodox family. My husband is Turkish, born Muslim. My family/background/tradition and my heart were at odds. And we beat the odds. We made it work, without losing the love and support of either of our families. That's more of a testament to our families than to anything I achieved, but we found a way to make it work for all of us.
What is a trait you are most proud of? How much I love to laugh.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Listen to your creative side. Being a child of immigrants, I was always encouraged to be sensible and practical. And I was. But a part of me wanted to fly, even with my feet deep in the mud. I finally allowed myself to 'go for it' when I was in my fifties. I had fun, I always had fun, when I was younger. But I felt like I finally became myself when I started to let myself write.
Words of wisdom to younger women
Recovery. There's always recovery. Whatever you're going through, or thinking about, whatever is holding you back, is temporary. The sun will set and rise again, and you'll still be here, and that setback will be gone. You've got this...and don't let anyone or anything tell you otherwise. It's all there for the taking. But, be kind along the way, and take the time to listen and hear the good stuff that's all around you.
Ah, if only I looked like I did when I was twenty, had the energy of when I was thirty, and the wisdom of being sixty!
