"You don’t know how strong you are,
until strong is what
you need to be.
You can do it!"
AGE: 75
PROFESSION: Cosmetologist with Skin Care being my focus for 30 years.
What is the best thing about being your age?
Truly knowing myself and no longer being shy about speaking up. Being less of an introvert.
What hardships have you endured that you feel have made you stronger?
Being divorced and a single mom, with little money for many years, taught me how to be my own plumber, how to check the oil in the car and change a tire…in other words, being self reliant.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I feel happiness is a choice you make. You can feel sad, hurt and angry at things that life throws your way and still feel happiness. There is always something to be grateful and joyful for, no matter what. The simplest of things makes me happy.
What is your most treasured possession?
My mother’s necklace made entirely with chestnuts. During WWII (in Germany) people barely had enough food to eat much less money for jewelry. The necklace is wired together chestnuts with a few small embellishments. It feels so nice on, because the nuts are warmed by one’s body heat.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is having raised two absolutely wonderful, intelligent, kind, beautiful daughters that are women I really like, and of course, love very much.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To be able to follow through with my intentions. Due to being on chemo for so long, I live mostly in the moment. That makes me forget things that I want to or mean to do. It makes me feel that I’ve become a self centered person which I’ve never been.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
That I have continued to stay open to learning new things and have stayed in awe of all the beautiful and marvelous things that nature shows us every day.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Once in awhile, buying a really great bottle of champagne.
What is your motto or favorite quote?
“Know your animal “ is my motto. When dealing with other people, understand who you are dealing with and accept that person’s limitations and strengths without trying to make them change. You might then see their awesomeness.
Words of wisdom to younger women...
You don’t know how strong you are, until strong is what you need to be. You can do it! Stay curious and surround yourself with different generations. It will enrich your life and keep you young.
Additional thoughts...
Aging is a privilege, it’s a gift. So many people aren’t lucky enough to get older. Embrace every birthday.
